I agree that national divorce is not the answer and I think it may include no longer using the words, conservative and progressive.
I was listening to a conversation between Dave Rubin and Bret Weinstein about two months ago and something Rubin said made a connection in my mind between their conversation and the concept of Hegelian left (Young Hegelians) and right (Old). I described this epiphany in a comment on Boghossian's substack because he was wondering about the lack of bipartisanship in protecting children from gender ideology.
"Academics seem to have a fascination with the idea that people can be separated into those favoring progressive intuitions and those favoring conservative intuitions...I think a lot of people associate Democrat (left) with progressive (new) and Republican (right) with conservative (old) in the Hegelian sense, creating a natural negative sentiment override."
I love the analogy of a national "divorce" because it might point to the solution. Dr. John Gottman claims he can predict divorce with over 90% accuracy because while individual human action is difficult to predict with high accuracy, when it comes to human relationships, it is easier to predict. I think the framing of American politics as "left" and "right" and their conflation over time with the concepts of progressive and conservative produces a natural negative sentiment override. If so, I think your solution to become one as Americans, in positive sentiment override, is the correct one. That may not be possible if we continue to use the words conservative and progressive to describe ourselves. I believe we need to recognize these concepts for what they are, weapons for manipulating our relationships with each other.
For those who are not convinced that this is intentional (and coming from the United Nations), I stumbled across evidence for both today (Feb-7-2024). It actually sent a chill down my spine when I read it because it is so similar to my comment on Boghossian’s substack. It is straight from the horse’s mouth.
“Today, all of the work is interrelated and coordinated into one worldwide group effort, and the senior members of this group who are responsible for the implementing of the Plan in these various fields have been called the New Group of World Servers. The results of the work accomplished in these seven fields can be clearly seen...Progress from the old ways and ideas into the new has produced a natural division of intelligent men and women into two general and basic attitudes, the conservative and the progressive. This applies in all fields of human affairs producing clarifying comparisons which bring opportunity of choice and therefore opportunity for improvement."
No where in this lengthy treatise is leadership mentioned, as if divorce or preservation falls on group dynamics first. I say as a conservative American that only strong leaders led by a strong leader and committed citizens can preserve the entire constitutional republic and a market based thriving economy. Free speech and 2A must be maintained and, if necessary, fought for. Tyrants must be vanquished and must fear freedom fighters. Individual freedom is the core right that must be preserved.
The idea of national divorce of the US seems to have been on the table 30 years ago, as described by David Aikman in his 1993 novel "When the Almond Tree Blossoms":
Don’t care about America as a concept anymore. The enemy & mass invaders must be removed not interested in upholding their rights. El Salvador did it so can we.
Really good points; thank you.

I brought up the negative sentiment override because it describes the "natural" effect of a long-term relationship gone bad.
"America needs a recovery conversation. https://youtu.be/AKTyPgwfPgg?t=1586 We are in Negative Sentiment Override (NSO). https://youtu.be/AKTyPgwfPgg?t=1454 We need to get into Positive Sentiment Override. https://youtu.be/AKTyPgwfPgg?t=1407 "

James Version (KJV)
Where there is no vision, the people perish: But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

Which reminds me that in the Red State such a divorce would be loaded with apocalyptical meaning, with all kinds of consequences.
Another fun read is Matt Ruff's "The Mirage", where in an upside-down world there are entities like the Evangelical Republic of Texas.

Very important points on perhaps the most important topic of the world (worth our attention and discussion).
Quite the cogent argument. This needs to be shared widely.
What happens when half the country doesn't accept the November election results?
Same as last year, nothing. Mostly peaceful riots? It’s all so lame.
No, it isn't.
