This was beautiful. Your the type that needs some time to reflect and compose your work, it's like a song.

This is why you need to stay off Twitter. It doesn't allow the time and space you need to write meaningfully.

Seriously, Kelly-Jay is lovely, her points about your comments are completely valid critique. When you feel that needling, you must recognize that as a narcissistic defense and be the better angel of your nature.

We need her just as much as we need you in this fight.

Excellent essay, James.

I was very impressed with how you pulled so many things together and how you repeated, and repeated, that human beings are not God. It is one of the more comprehensive essays written on the subject, yet concise enough where it cannot be attacked on many fronts.

The only issue I had with it is that there is a tension between what can be known about thriving in general, versus what can be known about a particular person's endeavor to thrive.

In the first sense, even though we're human, we can come to know about the general things required to thrive. This point justifies the rest of the essay, where some precautionary instructions are given because it is a fact that the relevance of the precautions is knowable.

In the second sense, one human cannot possibly come to know how the next one will thrive best. Even discovering how you, yourself, can best thrive may only occur for, say, 1% to 10% of human beings (those most willing to do the work of learning about thriving).

From my point of view, your beginning came on too strong in resting on fallibility without delimiting the scope of the fallibility -- opening the essay up to the criticism of the skepticists and the dreaded existentialists (those who think that even general truths cannot ever be known).

But James, you have to admit the founders came from a Judaeo-Christian heritage. Insofar as we lose or reject that heritage, classical liberalism vanishes, as it is now doing.

Keep fighting the good fight. All you young fighters are in my prayers.
